A Practical Guide to Moving with Pets

Мid adult woman moving to new house and sitting on the stairs and petting her golden retriever Moving can be both thrilling and stressful for you and your pet. Since this is the case, it is crucial to start preparing your pet for the move as soon as possible. Moving even a short distance can disrupt your pet’s routine and sense of security, and long-distance relocations can be especially challenging for a furry family member. In order to make your move as easy on your pet as possible, here are some tips to help get them ready for the big day.

Prepare Ahead of Time

If you need to relocate with a pet shortly, it’s best to start preparing them as soon as possible. To ensure a seamless relocation, plan and address a few essential concerns beforehand. For instance, check that the data on your pet’s tags, license, and microchip is current. To make sure your pet is healthy and that you have all the prescription medications they need, schedule an appointment with the veterinarian. If your pet, however, dislikes going to the vet, try to avoid making appointments too close to the move since it could increase stress.

Stick to Routines

Animals are habit-loving creatures who thrive on routine. This is why the chaos of moving, particularly in the weeks leading up to and following the move, may be very distressing for them. While you begin to pack for your move, try your best to keep up with as much of your regular routine as you can. For dogs in particular this is especially important as they could become anxious or start acting destructively if neglected. As much as you can, keep the eating schedule at the same time each day, taking daily walks at the same time, and scheduling playtime.

Introduce the Crate Early On

If your pet needs to spend time in a cage or kennel as part of your move, this can be a particularly upsetting experience for them, especially if they are not yet accustomed to a crate. Introduce the crate to your pet and allow them start associating it with good things weeks before the relocation. This is one of the best ways to get them ready for the transition. For instance, encourage them to investigate the crate, and then reward them with treats when they do. Your pet won’t be as frightened on the big day thanks to this.

Bring Comfort Items

Pets are attracted to the noises and smells of home. To keep your pet calm while you relocate, bring along some sensory items and leave them with them. Keep your pet’s favorite blanket or pet bed with them, for instance, during a transfer. A pet’s favored toy or even a piece of your clothing can also provide comfort. Additionally, keep your pet’s food, treats, and water with you before, during, and after the transfer.

Provide a Safe Space

When the big day comes, you might want to think about setting aside a specific space for your pet. It is best to place pets in a quiet room or fenced yard during a move, as pets frequently become anxious and may even run away if given the opportunity. Consider asking a dependable friend or family member to care for your companion during the moving process to spare them the stress and chaos. Providing a secure area will keep your pet out of danger and help you manage their anxiety during the transfer.
